The Greater Fort Wayne Inc. Fellows program connects current college students to GFW Inc. Investors and the greater Fort Wayne community through a year-long experience that includes a 12-week summer internship with a dedicated GFW Inc., investor. Students are admitted to the Fellows program after an application process, and are selected by a host company.
During the year-long program, Fellows participate in personal development, civic engagement, and professional networking opportunities as a means to create an attachment to the community. Program staff check in with Fellows alumni after graduation, through a case-management-based approach, recording where they move to after graduation.
In addition to the various development opportunities, Fellows live together in the summer months at an apartment complex in Fort Wayne. Living in community allows the cohort to bond and develop lifelong relationships that can be continued once they move to Fort Wayne after graduation. Fellows have even started businesses together, utilizing each other’s knowledge and skillsets to become successful.
Host companies pay an upfront fee of $3,000 per intern and are expected to pay an hourly rate commensurate to their industry’s standard for interns when they are working in the summer. Host companies are encouraged, not required, to keep their interns on part time during the school year once the internship is completed. Host companies are also required to provide both a supervisor and mentor for the intern, supporting their professional development during the internship.
Internships have been completed in mechanical, electrical, civil, and computer engineering, software development, IT, human resources, data analytics, media production, and marketing.
