MadeByMe
Building Allen County’s
Skilled Workforce
To build a nationally recognized economy, we need world-class builders. And electricians. And plumbers. And advanced manufacturing workers. People who can get the job done with hard work, know-how, attention to detail, and dedication to their craft.
About the program
MadeByMe is a collaborative initiative by Greater Fort Wayne Inc., connecting high school students with rewarding career opportunities in advanced manufacturing and skilled trades. Through partnerships with industry leaders, educators, and community organizations, the program highlights the diverse pathways available in these high-demand fields.
By showcasing real-world opportunities and offering valuable insights, MadeByMe empowers students to explore fulfilling careers while helping to build a stronger, more skilled local workforce.
Solid pay. In-demand skills. Little to no student debt.
The skilled trades offer a compelling career path, and we’re taking that message directly to local students. We partner with local schools to give presentations about the opportunities available in the trades. Many of these presentations come from local business leaders who provide firsthand insights about the industry.
Allen County will see 43,000+ job openings in the construction trades and advanced manufacturing in the next 10 years, according to forecasters.
It’s one thing to hear the numbers; it’s another to meet the people who will do the hiring and see firsthand what the jobs look like. That’s why we attend career exploration fairs at local K-12 schools and community colleges, and we encourage local employers to join us there, too. Those connections can open the door to rewarding careers and a stronger workforce.
Educators play a vital role in shaping future career paths.
Each summer, local companies open their doors to teachers and guidance counselors for hands-on externships. These on-site experiences allow educators to observe daily operations, understand the training and skills required, and gain valuable insight into the opportunities available in today’s skilled trades.
With this firsthand knowledge, educators return to the classroom better equipped to guide students toward high-demand, rewarding careers.
As an added bonus, externships may count toward professional licensing requirements through the State of Indiana. While participation isn’t mandatory, most externships are paid. In fact, every company that has participated in the program to date has compensated educators for their time and contributions.

Your Future, Made By You
The skilled trades and manufacturing industries in Allen County offer high-demand careers that combine hands-on skills with critical thinking. Local employers are actively seeking young professionals and provide pathways to rewarding, good-paying jobs close to home.
Many roles do not require a four-year degree, and you can earn industry-recognized certifications in a year or less, even while in high school. More training leads to greater opportunities and higher earnings, all while minimizing or avoiding college debt.
