SDI La Farga plans company expansion in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Ind. – SDI La Farga, LLC today announced plans for an upcoming expansion. The copper reclamation and production company intends to add up to 30 new jobs and invest nearly $16 million at its New Haven facility by the end of 2021.

Founded in 2010, SDI La Farga is a joint venture between Steel Dynamics and the Barcelona, Spain-based La Farga Group. The company reclaims scrap copper, refines it, and produces high-quality copper rod and wire. Production at the New Haven plant began in 2012.

“We have had tremendous growth since our inception, which is a testament to our teammates,” SDI La Farga president Kurt Breischaft said. “This expansion will help us better serve our customers in the Midwest, and specifically in Indiana. We’ll be able to operate more efficiently, ramp up our production, and create more jobs in New Haven, which has been a great place to do business.”

Currently, SDI La Farga produces 180 million pounds of finished product per year using one furnace to melt and refine copper. The expansion will add a second furnace to the existing facility at 1640 Ryan Rd., allowing the company to produce copper 24 hours a day, increasing capacity by 250 million pounds annually.

SDI La Farga plans to hire additional production shift and logistical employees. Interested applicants may learn more and apply online at SDILaFarga.com.

“Indiana’s fiscally sound, pro-growth business climate and talented workforce make the state an ideal location for SDI La Farga to expand,” Indiana Secretary of Commerce Jim Schellinger said. “We’re excited to witness SDI La Farga’s continued growth and success in Indiana and remain committed to supporting companies, like SDI La Farga, that are offering quality career opportunities for Hoosiers and investing in our state.”

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. (IEDC) offered SDI La Farga up to $255,000 in conditional tax credits. These incentives are performance-based, meaning the company is eligible to claim incentives once Hoosiers are hired. Northeast Indiana Works will provide the company with additional hiring and training assistance. New Haven City Council will also consider tax phase-ins for SDI La Farga’s eligible real and personal (equipment) property investments.

“I’m proud to see SDI La Farga expanding in our city,” New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald said. “As a community, we have worked hard to build an excellent business climate and maintain a high quality of life in New Haven. Today’s announcement shows that hard work is paying off.”
